Development of Highway,s.

It looks like you're asking “what’s going on on the highways in India” — here’s a snapshot of recent developments, challenges, and infrastructure news across major highways as of mid‑July 2025.

🛣️ Key Highway Developments & Construction Projects

Delhi–Dehradun Expressway continues to face delays. Originally slated to open in July 2025, its completion is now pushed to August 2025, due to a disputed land parcel in Ghaziabad and structural issues like a collapsed pillar in Saharanpur. Though mostly built, public frustration is mounting, despite praise for its green corridor design.

Prayagraj Inner Ring Road: The third segment—an 8.8 km, four-lane stretch—is set to begin construction by the end of July 2025, marking ongoing upgrade efforts in Uttar Pradesh.

NH‑65 (Vijayawada–Hyderabad region): NHAI has approved extension of six-laning up to the Vijayawada West bypass, expanding earlier plans and easing road traffic in Andhra Pradesh.

Green infrastructure: Along Ayodhya National Highway in Lucknow, a 550m green pathway and urban forest development are underway, merging highway beautification with environmental planning.

Several long-distance expressways are advancing:

Varanasi–Kolkata Expressway (NH‑319B) expected by 2026–2027.

Gorakhpur–Siliguri Expressway targeted for completion by 2028.

Aroor–Thuravoor Elevated Highway in Kerala (12.75 km, 6‑lanes), soon to be India’s longest elevated highway.

⚠️ Safety Concerns & Accidents on Highways

A fatal crash on the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar–Jalgaon highway claimed three lives (a man and his two children) when a truck hit their motorcycle near Satala Phata. The accident caused local disruption and outrage.

In Chhattisgarh (NH‑30, Kanker district), a car crash into a bridge railing led to four young men being burnt alive early on July 19, 2025; two others were injured. Eyewitnesses suggest possible alcohol involvement.

On NH‑3 (Agra–Mumbai), the Ganesh Ghat section in Madhya Pradesh is rapidly deteriorating just months after opening—potholes large enough to fit a car. Local leaders have demanded urgent repairs and probe into contractor quality.

In Indore, MP, heavy rainfall and ongoing construction on the Indore‑Dewas highway caused severe waterlogging and a 32‑hour traffic jam; at least three fatalities were reported among stranded motorists.

A highway widening project between Jehanabad and Gaya (NH‑22 in Bihar) has become hazardous: full-grown trees remain in the middle of the newly expanded four-lane road due to a dispute between road and forest authorities, prompting an FIR and safety warnings.

A collapse occurred in May 2025 on NH‑66 in Kerala’s Malappuram district—a retaining structure at a construction site failed, injuring seven people and damaging multiple vehicles. The government has banned the contractor involved and ordered a formal investigation.

📊 Policy, Sustainability & Revenue Insights

The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH) plans to start ranking states based on their “ease of land acquisition” to reduce infrastructure delays in national highway projects.

NHAI sustainability report shows greenhouse gas emission intensity dropped from 1.0 to 0.8 MTCO₂e/km in FY 2023‑24, despite increased highway construction—a sign of greener building practices.

Toll revenue is surging: Q1 FY 2025 toll collections reached ₹20,682 crore (a 19.6% increase), positioning total annual receipts to potentially exceed ₹80,000 crore.

New highway construction in FY 2025 slowed to a 7‑year low (~7,000 km), as NHAI shifted focus toward upgrades and strengthening existing roads. However, construction of high‑lane expressways continues robustly.

✅ Summary

Major expressway projects like Delhi–Dehradun, NH‑65, and local ring roads are under active development but see delays due to land and structural issues.

Multiple accidents and safety hazards—including crashes, waterlogging, and poor construction—are intensifying concerns over road quality and oversight.

Meanwhile, authorities are ramping up sustainable infrastructure efforts, imposing land‑acquisition rankings, and boosting toll facilities, despite slowing new‑road growth and increasing revenue.
